Set, Achieve, Succeed:

How Individual Sports Can Develop Life Skills in Teens

By Fountain Valley School February 17, 2025

Did you know that the practice of setting and achieving goals can boost both self-esteem and resilience in teens? Lucky for parents, there are individual sports—like mountain biking and climbing—that promote more than just physical fitness in adolescents. They help teens develop crucial life skills.

Whether hitting the trails or scaling a rock wall, mountain bikers and climbers often find their toughest competition is themselves. Armed with self-discipline and internal motivation to succeed, young athletes are driven to push boundaries and surpass their personal bests, fueled more by intrinsic motivators than by family and peers.

And, at the heart of this determination lies the capacity to recover quickly after falling just short of a goal. This mental discipline—the ability to navigate anxiety, remain calm under pressure, and focus on the task at hand even in the midst of a crowd—is easily transferable to every part of life, from academics to social interactions, making individual sports the perfect outlet for teens to learn, grow, and soar.

Let Fountain Valley Summer (FVS) Camps take the guesswork out of finding the right programs to help your child thrive. Beginning on June 9, 2025, FVS Camps will offer a week-long program designed to equip day climbers in grades 7 through 10 with the confidence needed to conquer the tallest high school climbing wall in the nation and scale a rock face in the great outdoors. And, from June 16–19, day campers ages 12 to 17 will hit the over 15 miles of trails that paint the Fountain Valley Prairie with Head Coach Daniel Matheny. Campers of all skill levels will also explore local mountain bike trails, learn tips and tricks from industry experts, and more.
