13 Kids in store Crafts & Workshops

Year round fun

By Jenn Grubb Editor/Publisher Macaroni Kid Colorado Springs June 10, 2023

Looking for some fun in store workshops?

Most of these are year round, so keep them in mind throughout the season!

With everything getting more expensive, parents are trying to find inexpensive and easy ways to entertain their kids. Enter In-store events! For these stores mentioned we are referencing stores that do events for FREE either every month or every weekend.

Please be sure to check each stores website to make sure the event is still scheduled before leaving the house

Bass Pro Shops

Bass offers FREE Family Summer Camp with FREE Workshops every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in June and July. Learn archery, birdwatching, kayaking, and more. Kids get a free lanyard to collect the pins they'll earn at each workshop.

The rest of the year, you'll find their class schedule at each store's website. Look for a fun Halloween event for kids!

Cabela's

Some Cabela's are offering FREE Summer Camp sessions for kids ages 8-12 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kids can learn panning for gold, identifying animals, and archery. Check your local store's event calendar for details, since not all stores are participating.

 Lego Stores

Each month, Lego Stores have free events for kids between the ages of 6 to 14 where they can come in and build a mini model. After they've built the mini model, they get to take it home for free. There is a limit of four children per household per event, and children must stay for the entire event to take home the Lego kit. Kits may not be picked up at a later time.

Apple Camp

Apple Stores offer free summer camps for kids about storytelling, songwriting and coding. During the school year, they offer classes and workshops for kids 12+ at their store and local libraries.

JoAnn

JOANN Fabric and Craft Stores offer classes and events for kids to learn knitting, crocheting, sewing and more.

Cupcake and cake decorating classes also offered. Fees apply.

Home Depot Kids Workshops

The first Saturday of each month, between 9am-Noon, kids can make a wooden project at Home Depot.

Click on your local store so you can register ahead of time. Kids receive a certificate of completion, an apron, and a pin.

Lowe's Build and Grow

They're back! After a couple of years off, Lowe's is offering their FREE Kids Workshops again. You do have to register ahead of time, and they happen the second Saturday of each month from 9am-Noon.  Once a month on a Saturday you can reserve a DIY Craft from Lowe's. Much like their competitor, the craft kits usually consist of something you will build with your child. They typically involve wood but sometimes materials will vary. Lowes functions differently though in that you are required to reserve your kit and they offer different time slots for reservations. You usually will receive the kit and a red apron while there. At 1PM, any crafts not claimed are then given to any walk-in's that were unable to reserve online.

Michael's Arts and Crafts

Kids can do craft projects at Michaels for $2 on Mondays and Saturdays, with hours varying by store. Check your local store's online calendar to register ahead of time.  Surprise Surprise that a craft store would offer crafting events right!? Michaels hosts their craft events every weekend, typically on Sundays. Each craft varies from kid-friendly to adult but typically every store participates. Check out their next in-store event here.

Microsoft YouthSpark Summer Camps

Check at your local Microsoft Store for free kid camps on robotics, coding, movie making and more. Click on “see local calendar” for options in your area.

They've expanded into offering classes for kids in grades K-12 during the school year, too!

POTTERY BARN KIDS

I am not sure if this is a monthly thing but I know in the past, Pottery Barn was known for hosting lots of kids events. Their events are very kid friendly so definitely be sure to add them to your next "free weekend list." Click here to see what events are happening at the local Pottery Barn Kids.

LAKESHORE LEARNING

Lakeshore Learning is a teacher's store. They sell items you would find in a classroom from door decorations to activities to the class room and even seating. They also host kids events! Their events can range from monthly to weekly but they always come with an education and fun factor. In terms of their scheduling, it is best to check their website to see what the next event is. They are on Saturdays. The closest Lakeshore Learning to us is in Lone Tree near the Park Meadows Mall.

JCPENNY

On the 2nd Saturday of every month you can get some shopping done at your local JCPenny and have a fun craft to do! JCPenny calls this their Kids Zone (typically in the children's section). Each month there is a different theme so check their website for that months theme, pack the kiddos in the car and head to your local JCPenny. Kids receive a FREE Craft, ID badge, lanyard, collectors pin each month + Master Medallion after completing 6 crafts.

BARNES & NOBLE

Barnes & Noble is not only the largest in-person book seller, they are also where you go for Story Time and coffee all in one place. So pack the kids into the car and head out to Barnes & Noble for their weekly story time! While you're there don't forget to grab yourself a coffee from the in-store Starbucks.

They also occasionally do other events aside from Story Times. Like in October 2023 they had a LEGO Jack O'Lantern Event where kids could come, listen to a spooky story and then were given a Lego Jack O'Lantern to either build in-store or take home and build.

Always verify with the location to make sure they are offering the class and/or if there is a pre-registration form!
