On Jan.1, Colorado Parks and Wildlife invites you to celebrate the new year by hiking at a Colorado state park.

First Day Hikes offer a chance to start the new year off on the right foot by exercising in nature. Each participating state park offers a unique opportunity to enjoy self-guided hikes, scavenger hunts, or limited capacity guided hikes.

  • Hikes are free but park visitors must possess a valid parks pass
  • Participating parks may require a reservation prior to the hike, check the park’s webpage for details.
  • Hikes will vary in skill level and length depending on location and weather conditions.
  • Bring snacks, water, extra clothing, and hiking shoes with good traction. If trails are icy or snowy consider bringing trekking poles, snowshoes, or shoe spikes.

CPW requires state park visitors to follow COVID-19 community health guidelines and encourages people to practice Care for Colorado - Leave No Trace principles, such as:

  • Know before you go- check the COVID dial and Public Health Order in your county.
  • Recreate with your household only.
  • Spread out on trails and maintain a social distance of at least 6ft from others.
  • Wear a face mask indoors and outdoors when social distancing is difficult to maintain.
  • Wash your hands often and bring hand sanitizer.
  • Pack out all your trash.
