Earn Your Colorado Springs’ Junior Ranger Badge

By Vanessa Zink, Senior Public Communications Specialist for the City of Colorado Springs August 20, 2019

Do you know a kid who loves the outdoors? Or, are you looking for a fun way to connect your kids with nature? Perhaps you’re wrestling with too much screen time?

Then, the Junior Ranger Nature Pack is for you! Not to mention, this is the perfect time of year to get outdoors and explore some of the incredible parks and open spaces in Olympic City USA.

Offered for free by the Colorado Springs’ Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department, the Junior Ranger Nature Pack is loaded with supplies for fun, educational outdoor activities to help children and families explore, observe, describe and engage the senses at designated parks throughout the city.

While the program is available to everyone, it is designed for children ages 7-13. Activities are aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards for Science and Social Science, with an emphasis on STEM education.

The best part? Activities can be completed any time of year.

To earn the Junior Ranger badge, you need to complete all of the activities from at least five of the listed parks, and you have two weeks to do it.

Participating is easy!

Reserve your free pack online at www.coloradosprings.gov/juniorranger.

Insider tip: Only two packs are available to rent at a time, so plan ahead.

Pick up your pack by bringing your receipt to Parks’ headquarters (1401 Recreation Way).

Where is that? Parks HQ is conveniently located east of the I-25 Uintah Street exit.

Return the pack to Parks’ headquarters to receive your stickers, Junior Ranger Badge and a certificate.

Fun fact: Optional ranger “swearing-in” ceremonies take place throughout the year for participants who earn the junior ranger badge. Details can be found in your reservation receipt.

If you have questions about the program, email Wes at Wesley.hermann@coloradosprings.gov.
